Cost

Please contact Outshine regarding the cost as it varies for each of the following advanced classes.

Description

Outshine offers special classes several times during the week. The classes opportunities below vary during the year depending on the current text or texts being studied. These classes are meant for students who will do the homework assigned and will participate in the class. Each problem of the homework is expected to be completed or attempted by each student. Furthermore, students are expected to keep notes in a notebook for all classes and bring them to class each session as the material can be challenging.

If a different class (as distinct from 1 on 1 tutoring) is desired (such as Calculus), then please suggest it. If we can get enough students for such a class, we will try to set it up (if the parent of the child desiring a special class knows of others wanting the same class, it is easier to begin the desired class). Please notify us of you wishes. If the special class cannot be established, please contact Outshine for one-on-one tutoring on the subject for your child.

Mathematics

Outshine teaches many levels of mathematics in classes during the year. The material for these classes can be hard and homework is assigned after every session.

Pre-algebra

When available, class is once a week for 1.5 hours. Students get a thorough introduction of and learn problem-solving strategies for the fundamentals of arithmetic, fractions, exponents, multiples, primes, prime factorizations, basic equations, inequalities, ratios, percentages, square roots, statistics, and word problems.

Algebra

When available, class is once a week for 2 hours. Students cover more advanced aspects of the material in the prealgebra class and then proceed to explore functions, linear equations, quadratics, factoring of quadratics, completing the square, the quadratic formula, complex numbers, systems of equations, graphing, sequences and series, transformations, logarithms, and more.

Geometry

When available, class is once a week for 2 hours. Students start with axioms and then build on the fundamentals of geometry by working with angles, triangles (similar and congruent), complicated length and area problems, quadrilaterals, polygons, basic trigonometry, geometric proofs, and much more. This class is challenging.

Probability

When available, class is once a week for 2 hours. Students start with the principles of counting and proceed to permutations and combinations, with multiple cases considered. Once counting has been explored, the class transitions to using these techniques to develop understanding of probability, of expected values, of Pascal’s triangle, and of the Binomial theorem.

Coding

Outshine has developed a course on game programming using a language similar to Python (Gdscript) on the Godot Programming Platform. Students joining this course often will develop an entire game from scratch according to the teacher’s instruction. While many of the concepts may be too difficult to use on their own, the students will learn what different lines of code produce. The idea is to show the children the power of programming while guiding them to code a game from scratch which they can share with their friends and feel proud.

English Writing

Outshine teaches students the parts of speech, the different types and structures of sentences, and how to write prose. However, instruction isn’t enough, and the students must put effort into writing their own pieces most weeks and apply the principles of writing. Parents are expected to make sure the students are writing, so they have substantive material to share with the teacher for review. Outshine focuses on two aspects: essay (formal writing), and story structure (fiction).

Spanish

Outshine teaches special Spanish classes. A fluent Spanish speaker teaches the students how to read, write, and speak Spanish. Students have a workbook which they are expected to complete as instructed.
